Services

Scope of Service Development

Before developing a proposal, Northeast Geotechnical will first get to know our client’s goals, objectives, expectations, and budgetary constraints. Once we understand our client’s needs, we will develop a scope of services and a budget. Our services include preliminary engineering studies to assess project feasibility, design phase engineering studies that lead to recommendations for design and construction, and construction phase services to assess contractor compliance with the project requirements.

Subsurface Explorations

Northeast Geotechnical will assess the subsurface soil, bedrock, and groundwater conditions at a site by performing soil test borings and/or test pits. Prior to developing the subsurface exploration program, we visit the site to assess surficial conditions and exploration equipment access and assess the anticipated conditions through a review of published subsurface geology maps, in-house data, available subsurface information provided by the client, and our experience in the area. The subsurface exploration program will then be planned based on the proposed project design and anticipated subsurface conditions. We are adept at modifying the subsurface exploration program based on actual conditions encountered.

Hydrogeologic Testing

Northeast Geotechnical personnel are experienced in assessing subsurface hydrogeologic characteristics through a variety of field testing, including percolation tests, borehole permeability tests, slug testing, pump testing, and double-ring infiltrometer testing. We also perform full-scale testing if required due to complex subsurface conditions or project size. We are particularly familiar with the requirements of the Massachusetts Stormwater Handbook for projects in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Geotechnical Engineering Studies

Northeast Geotechnical will perform engineering evaluation and analysis to develop geotechnical engineering recommendations for use by the project team in design and construction. These recommendations are based on our study of the results of the subsurface explorations and laboratory tests. We routinely provide conclusions and recommendations regarding building design, site development design, and construction issues, including: foundation type, allowable soil and bedrock bearing capacity, floor slab design, settlement, seismic design criteria and liquefaction potential, foundation and floor slab drainage, pre-loading and surcharging, ground improvement, dewatering, pavement design, retaining wall design criteria including lateral earth pressures and underdrainage, excavation support criteria, slope stability, hydrogeologic soil parameters, groundwater mounding analyses and modeling, earthwork technical specifications, deep foundation installation specifications and load testing recommendations, instrumentation, underpinning of structures, and blasting criteria.

Geotechnical Engineering Report Preparation

Northeast Geotechnical conveys our engineering conclusions and recommendations to the project team in a concise geotechnical engineering report. The geotechnical engineering report typically includes an exploration location plan that shows test boring and test pit locations, test boring and/or test pit logs, and laboratory test results. When applicable, subsurface profiles, bedrock contour plans, and engineering details are also included in the geotechnical engineering report.

Preconstruction Consultation

Northeast Geotechnical will review the applicable portions of the project plans and specifications to assess that our engineering recommendations have been properly interpreted and included. Depending on the project requirements, Northeast Geotechnical will develop earthwork, pile installation, and excavation support performance specifications. Northeast Geotechnical can provide input to clients regarding earthwork, specialty foundation, ground improvement and dewatering contractors and attend pre-bid meetings with the shortlist of potential earthwork contractors and preconstruction meetings upon request.

Earthwork Observation & Testing

Northeast Geotechnical believes that continuing geotechnical engineering review during construction is an integral part of our services and an important risk management tool for our clients and us. Northeast Geotechnical provides earthwork observation and soil testing services during the earthwork, ground improvement and foundation construction/installation phases of the project. The intent is to assess that earthwork related construction is performed in compliance with pertinent sections of the project plans and specifications as well as our geotechnical engineering recommendations.

Construction Materials Testing (Concrete, Asphalt)

Northeast Geotechnical provides concrete and pavement testing services. Our experienced field engineers and engineering technicians are American Concrete Institute (ACI) certified to test the fresh properties of concrete during placement and cast concrete cylinders in the field for laboratory compressive strength testing. Northeast Geotechnical uses state-of-the-art testing equipment to assess compaction of bituminous concrete during pavement operations.

Soil Evaluator Services

Northeast Geotechnical’s soil evaluators are licensed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and are available to provide soil evaluator services supporting septic and stormwater infiltration system design. The soil evaluator will classify the subsurface soils in accordance with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, assess the presence of redoximorphic features, estimate the seasonal high groundwater table, collect representative soil samples for laboratory testing and perform percolation testing.
